SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
105 ILCS 5/2-3.142 new

    Amends the School Code. Requires the State Board of Education, in cooperation with the Department of State Police, to develop a weapons safety program designed to protect children from the risk of gun-related death and injury. Provides that the program must be designed to teach children to follow an effective safety procedure when they are exposed to a gun and shall specifically warn children that contact with guns can result in serious injury or death. Provides that a school district may incorporate the weapons safety program into its curriculum. Requires the State Board of Education to submit a report to the Governor and the General Assembly as to the status of the program no later than January 1, 2009.

1     AN ACT concerning education.
 
2     Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3 represented in the General Assembly:
 
4     Section 5. The School Code is amended by adding Section
5 2-3.142 as follows:
 
6     (105 ILCS 5/2-3.142 new)
7     Sec. 2-3.142. Weapons safety program.
8     (a) The State Board of Education shall, in cooperation with
9 the Department of State Police, develop a weapons safety
10 program designed to protect children from the risk of
11 gun-related death and injury. The program must be designed to
12 teach children to follow an effective safety procedure when
13 they are exposed to a gun and shall specifically warn children
14 that contact with guns can result in serious injury or death.
15     (b) A school district may incorporate the weapons safety
16 program into its curriculum.
17     (c) The State Board of Education shall submit a report to
18 the Governor and the General Assembly as to the status of the
19 program no later than January 1, 2009.
