SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 		













105 ILCS 5/2-3.142 new











    Amends the School Code.  Requires the State Board of Education, in cooperation with the Department of State Police, to develop a weapons safety program designed to protect children from the risk of gun-related death and injury.  Provides that the program must be designed to teach children to follow an effective safety procedure when they are exposed to a gun and shall specifically warn children that contact with guns can result in serious injury or death.  Provides that a school district may incorporate the weapons safety program into its curriculum.  Requires the State Board of Education to submit a report to the Governor and the General Assembly as to the status of the program no later than January 1, 2009.

    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,

represented in the General Assembly:

    Section 5. The School Code is amended  by adding Section 
5
2-3.142 as follows:

    (105 ILCS 5/2-3.142 new)

    Sec. 2-3.142. Weapons safety program.

    (a)  The State Board of Education shall, in cooperation with 
9
the Department of State Police, develop a weapons safety 
10
program designed to protect children from the risk of 
11
gun-related death and injury.  The program must be designed to 
12
teach children to follow an effective safety procedure when 
13
they are exposed to a gun and shall specifically warn children 
14
that contact with guns can result in serious injury or death.

    (b)  A school district may incorporate the weapons safety 
16
program into its curriculum.

    (c)  The State Board of Education shall submit a report to
