SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 45

(As Amended by Senate Amendment No. 1)

WHEREAS, Cholesterol is essential to the human body's functioning; however, high LDL-C (bad cholesterol) can lead to heart disease; and

WHEREAS, There are no warning signs of high cholesterol, and the only way to find out one's total blood cholesterol is through a lipoprotein profile blood test; and

WHEREAS, Hyperlipidemia occurs when there are too many lipids in the blood, therefore causing high cholesterol and high triglycerides; and

WHEREAS, The American Heart Association recommends consulting a doctor to understand one's condition and then determining a treatment that may include healthy diet choices and exercise along with medication, depending on one's overall risk; and

WHEREAS, Cholesterol Counts is an awareness program that aims to have individuals take an active role in understanding that there is more to be done to control high cholesterol and encourages the conversation between patients and their healthcare providers; and

WHEREAS, Encouraging Illinois residents to participate in Cholesterol Counts can help monitor the overall cholesterol statistics for Illinois and provide awareness for treatment; and

WHEREAS, The Illinois Department of Public Health already encourages residents to get their blood cholesterol checked during September, which is designated as National Cholesterol Education Month; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING HEREIN, that we recognize the importance of encouraging Illinois residents to understand their cholesterol testing results and coordinate treatment with their healthcare provider; and be it further

RESOLVED, That we urge the Illinois Department of Public Health to post a link providing access to www.takedowncholesterol.com on its website under the Resources section on its Cholesterol page; and be it further

RESOLVED, That we urge the Illinois Department of Public Health to designate September 1, 2016 as Hyperlipidemia Awareness Day in the State of Illinois; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be delivered to the Illinois Department of Public Health.
