SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Cholesterol is essential to the human body's
3functioning; however, high LDL-C (bad cholesterol) can lead to
4heart disease; and
 
5    WHEREAS, There are no warning signs of high cholesterol,
6and the only way to find out one's total blood cholesterol is
7through a lipoprotein profile blood test; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Hyperlipidemia occurs when there are too many
9lipids in the blood, therefore causing high cholesterol and
10high triglycerides; and
 
11    WHEREAS, The American Heart Association recommends
12consulting a doctor to understand one's condition and then
13determining a treatment that may include healthy diet choices
14and exercise along with medication, depending on one's overall
15risk; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Cholesterol Counts is an awareness program that
17aims to have individuals take an active role in understanding
18that there is more to be done to control high cholesterol and
19encourages the conversation between patients and their
20healthcare providers; and

1    WHEREAS, Encouraging Illinois residents to participate in
2Cholesterol Counts can help monitor the overall cholesterol
3statistics for Illinois and provide awareness for treatment;
4and
 
5    WHEREAS, The Illinois Department of Public Health already
6encourages residents to get their blood cholesterol checked
7during September, which is designated as National Cholesterol
8Education Month; therefore, be it
 
9    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
10ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
11CONCURRING HEREIN, that we recognize the importance of
12encouraging Illinois residents to understand their cholesterol
13testing results and coordinate treatment with their healthcare
14provider; and be it further
 
15    RESOLVED, That we urge the Illinois Department of Public
16Health to post a link providing access to
17www.cholesterolcounts.com on its website under the Resources
18section on its Cholesterol page; and be it further
 
19    RESOLVED, That we urge the Illinois Department of Public
20Health to designate September 1, 2016 as Hyperlipidemia
21Awareness Day in the State of Illinois; and be it further
