AMENDMENT TO HOUSE BILL 1868

2    AMENDMENT NO. ______. Amend House Bill 1868 by replacing
3everything after the enacting clause with the following:
 
4    "Section 5. The Illinois Vehicle Code is amended by
5changing Section 12-803 as follows:
 
6    (625 ILCS 5/12-803)  (from Ch. 95 1/2, par. 12-803)
7    Sec. 12-803. (a) Each school bus shall be equipped with a
8stop signal arm on the driver's side of the school bus that may
9be operated either manually or mechanically. For each school
10bus manufactured on and after September 1, 1992, the stop
11signal arm shall be an octagon shaped semaphore that conforms
12to 49 C.F.R. 571.131, "SCHOOL BUS PEDESTRIAN SAFETY DEVICES",
13S5.1 through S5.5.
14    (b) Each school bus manufactured prior to September 1, 1992
15shall be equipped with a stop signal arm that conforms to
16standards promulgated by the Department.

1    (c) A school bus may be equipped with an arm extension
2attached to the stop signal arm. The arm extension may not
3extend more than 36 inches past the outermost part of the stop
4sign, may not exceed 4 inches wide, shall be made of aluminum
5or a polycarbonate material, and shall be illuminated in red on
6both sides. The arm extension may not change the integrity of
7the school bus.
8    (d) If a school bus is equipped with an additional stop
9signal arm on the rear of the bus, an arm extension may be
10attached. The arm extension shall meet all specifications
11outlined in subsection (c), except it may not extend more than
1212 inches past the outermost part of the rear stop sign.
