AMENDMENT TO HOUSE BILL 3776

2    AMENDMENT NO. ______. Amend House Bill 3776 by replacing
3everything after the enacting clause with the following:
 
4    "Section 5. The School Code is amended by adding Section
52-3.196 as follows:
 
6    (105 ILCS 5/2-3.196 new)
7    Sec. 2-3.196. Crosswalk and alignment.
8    (a) No later than June 1, 2024, the State Board of
9Education shall, in consultation with science and health
10education specialists, educators or former educators who teach
11or have taught the subject of science or health, parents, and
12medical experts, which may include medical doctors, doctors of
13osteopathy or osteopathic medicine, registered nurses,
14chiropractic physicians, exercise physiologists, or physical
15therapists, create a crosswalk and alignment to the Illinois
16Learning Standards, the Next Generation Science Standards

1adopted by the State Board of Education, and the Illinois
2Learning Standards for Science. The State Board must make the
3crosswalk and alignment and any accompanying resource
4materials available on its Internet website, so that
5elementary school teachers have access to high quality,
6age-appropriate, and free educational materials that are
7centered on anatomy, physiology, and nutrition to empower
8students with the knowledge of their own bodies and to care for
9their own health and well-being throughout their lives.
10    (b) The crosswalk and alignment required under this
11Section shall be focused on how to empower students with the
12knowledge to adequately understand their own bodies and care
13for their own health and well-being throughout their lives,
14with the idea that science education is more human-centered.
15The crosswalk and alignment shall additionally focus on
16connecting this human-centered science education with other
17sciences as students advance to other areas of their science
18education, such as chemistry, biology, and physics, taught at
19later grade levels.
20    (c) The crosswalk and alignment required under this
21Section shall include a review of the Illinois Learning
22Standards for Science and include recommendations to the State
23Board of Education to update the Illinois Learning Standards
24for Science by December 31, 2025.
25    (d) No later than December 31, 2030 and, at a minimum,
26every 5 years thereafter, the State Board of Education shall

1review and, as appropriate, update the crosswalk and alignment
2documents and resource materials made available under this
3Section.".
