AMENDMENT TO HOUSE BILL 2157

2    AMENDMENT NO. ______. Amend House Bill 2157 by replacing
3everything after the enacting clause with the following:
 
4    "Section 5. The Higher Education Student Assistance Act is
5amended by adding Section 65.110 as follows:
 
6    (110 ILCS 947/65.110 new)
7    Sec. 65.110. Volunteer firefighter grant program.
8    (a) Subject to appropriation, the Commission shall, each
9year, receive and consider applications for grant assistance
10under this Section. An applicant is eligible for grant
11assistance if the Commission finds that the applicant:
12        (1) is a resident of this State;
13        (2) is a volunteer firefighter or a volunteer EMS
14    personnel at the time the grant application is submitted
15    to the Commission;
16        (3) is a high school graduate or has received a high

1    school equivalency certificate;
2        (4) meets all requirements for admission to a public
3    community college; and
4        (5) is enrolled in an associate degree program at a
5    public community college.
6    (b) Applicants who are determined to be eligible for
7assistance under this Section shall receive, subject to
8appropriation, a renewable grant sufficient to pay all tuition
9and mandatory fees. The tuition and mandatory fees shall be
10paid directly to the public community college in which the
11applicant is enrolled.
12    (c) A grant recipient must not have an outstanding balance
13with the public community college and must maintain
14satisfactory academic progress as determined by the community
15college to remain eligible for grant assistance.
16    (d) A grant awarded under this Section may be renewed for
17up to a total of 2 years of full-time enrollment.
18    (e) The Commission shall adopt any rules necessary for the
19implementation and administration of this Section.
 
20    Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
21becoming law.".
