| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 | | learn of the death of Philip H. Barry of Elk Grove Village, who | 4 | | passed away on July 2, 2018; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Philip Barry was born in Chicago to English and | 6 | | Greek parents in 1922; he graduated from Schurz High School in | 7 | | 1939; he served in the Civilian Conservation Corp during the | 8 | | Great Depression; in 1941, he enlisted in the United States | 9 | | Signal Corps; he then served in the United States Air Force | 10 | | during World War II, where he maintained radar equipment as a | 11 | | technical sergeant in Italy and Germany; he earned a Bachelor | 12 | | of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of | 13 | | Colorado; and
| 14 | | WHEREAS, Philip Barry was employed by Teletype, now At&T, | 15 | | as an engineer for 40 years; and
| 16 | | WHEREAS, Philip Barry moved to the then year-old town of | 17 | | Elk Grove Village with his wife in June 1957 and immediately | 18 | | became involved with civic groups; in 1958, he was appointed | 19 | | village engineer; he was a charter member of the Elk Grove | 20 | | Village Historical Society and served as a long-time board | 21 | | member, including a tenure as board president; he helped lead | 22 | | efforts to relocate and renovate an 1856 farmhouse and 1858 |

| 1 | | barn, the Schuette-Biermann Farmhouse Museum, and used his | 2 | | carpentry skills to work on exhibits; he was a 35-year member | 3 | | of the Sheila Ray Senior Center, where he conducted a current | 4 | | events program, moderated the "Memories and More" program, | 5 | | supervised the wood shop and workroom, sang with the adult | 6 | | center choir, and participated in the Senior Olympics program | 7 | | with Elk Grove High School Students; and
| 8 | | WHEREAS, Philip Barry was an early member of the Lutheran | 9 | | Church of the Holy Spirit, where, for many years, he was the | 10 | | volunteer Sunday School principal; he was a member of the Lions | 11 | | Club and the VFW and taught high school junior achievement | 12 | | students; he was president of the Des Plaines Valley Geological | 13 | | Society for eight years and was the first to have the idea for | 14 | | a bridge over Higgins Road, linking parts of the Ned Brown | 15 | | Forest Preserve; and
| 16 | | WHEREAS, Philip Barry was a word traveler, historian, and | 17 | | geologist; he had many interests, including forestry, farming, | 18 | | carpentry, science, mathematics, and languages; he will be | 19 | | forever remembered by all who knew him; therefore, be it
| 20 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL | 21 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | 22 | | Philip H. Barry and extend our sincere condolences to his | 23 | | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it |
