HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Dr. Charles Runner of Chicago, who passed away on June 9, 2008; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Charles Runner was born on March 25, 1918 in Washington D.C.; he and his wife, Dorothy, were married in 1945 in the Thorndyke Hilton Chapel at the University of Chicago campus by civil rights leader and former Howard University theology professor Reverend Howard W. Thurman; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Charles Runner received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Howard University and Howard Medical School in Washington D.C.; he performed his pediatric residency at Provident Hospital in Chicago; and

WHEREAS, After serving in a United States Army hospital in Munich, Germany during the Korean War, Dr. Charles Runner returned to Chicago and set up a practice in 1955 on Chicago's South Side; Dr. Runner faithfully served the citizens of the South Side as a pediatrician for over 50 years until his retirement in 2001; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Charles Runner's medical practice was well known for its personal approach to medicine, with Dr. Runner intimately knowing the personal medical histories of the many families who came to his office generation after generation; his caring attitude and great knowledge of medicine will be greatly missed by his many adoring patients; and

WHEREAS, As a testament to his love for his fellow man, Dr. Charles Runner was named one of the first five recipients of the Martin Luther King Legacy Awards, a prestigious award given for community service by the Boys and Girls Club of Chicago, in 1989; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Charles Runner enjoyed opera and jazz and was a past board member of the Lyric Opera; he was also an avid photographer, enjoying the hobby well into his retirement; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Charles Runner is survived by his wife, Dorothy; his daughters, Susan Runner and Shari Carnegie; and his four grandchildren; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of Dr. Charles Runner; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Dr. Charles Runner as an expression of our sympathy.
