SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
35 ILCS 200/27-87 new

    Amends the Special Service Area Tax Law in the Property Tax Code. Provides that a municipality may propose a special service area as provided in this Law for the purpose of providing improvements to any one or more buildings if the improvements are required by municipal ordinance in order to protect the health and safety of workers, tenants, and visitors in the buildings. Sets forth requirements for establishing the special service area.

1     AN ACT concerning revenue.
 
2     Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3 represented in the General Assembly:
 
4     Section 5. The Property Tax Code is amended by adding
5 Section 27-87 as follows:
 
6     (35 ILCS 200/27-87 new)
7     Sec. 27-87. Special service areas to protect the health and
8 safety of workers, tenants, and visitors in buildings. A
9 municipality may propose a special service area as provided in
10 this Law for the purpose of providing improvements to any one
11 or more buildings if the improvements are required by municipal
12 ordinance in order to protect the health and safety of workers,
13 tenants, and visitors in the buildings; provided that if the
14 owners of 51% or more of the number of lots, tracts, and
15 parcels of the real estate that are to be subject to the tax
16 file a petition with the clerk of the municipality agreeing
17 with the establishment of a special service area, then the
18 corporate authorities of the municipality shall proceed with
19 the establishment of the special service area. If a petition is
20 not filed or contains an insufficient number of signatures, the
21 corporate authorities of the municipality may not proceed
22 further, and the same establishment of a special service area
23 shall not again be initiated for a period of one year.
