SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The youth movement in the United States known as "Boys State" is a program of citizen training sponsored by the American Legion; and

WHEREAS, Boys State was originated by the American Legion's Department of Illinois in 1934; the organization was subsequently adopted by the national organization in 1935 and since then has been put into operation in every state in the Union; and

WHEREAS, Boys State aims at all times to make its program of training in functional citizenship effective through creating a wide range of opportunities for participation; and

WHEREAS, The American Legion's Boys State partner program is Girls State, which provides training for young women in city, county, and state government; and

WHEREAS, With the educational benefits and importance of voting and getting involved in their communities, states, and the nation at large, Illinois Boys State and Illinois Girls State give young citizens confidence and knowledge to go forward in their adult lives; and

WHEREAS, The 2016 Illinois Boys State and 2016 Illinois Girls State are scheduled for June of 2016; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we designate June of 2016 as American Legion Boys State and Girls State Month in the State of Illinois to increase the awareness of these programs that educate and inform our young citizens; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the American Legion, Illinois Boys State, and Illinois Girls State as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
