SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The youth movement in the United States known as
3"Boys State" is a program of citizen training sponsored by the
4American Legion; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Boys State was originated by the American Legion's
6Department of Illinois in 1934; the organization was
7subsequently adopted by the national organization in 1935 and
8since then has been put into operation in every state in the
9Union; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Boys State aims at all times to make its program
11of training in functional citizenship effective through
12creating a wide range of opportunities for participation; and
 
13    WHEREAS, The American Legion's Boys State partner program
14is Girls State, which provides training for young women in
15city, county, and state government; and
 
16    WHEREAS, With the educational benefits and importance of
17voting and getting involved in their communities, states, and
18the nation at large, Illinois Boys State and Illinois Girls
19State give young citizens confidence and knowledge to go
20forward in their adult lives; and

1    WHEREAS, The 2016 Illinois Boys State and 2016 Illinois
2Girls State are scheduled for June of 2016; therefore, be it
 
3    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
4ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we designate June of
52016 as American Legion Boys State and Girls State Month in the
6State of Illinois to increase the awareness of these programs
7that educate and inform our young citizens; and be it further
 
8    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
9presented to the American Legion, Illinois Boys State, and
10Illinois Girls State as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
