SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Gordon Neal Keating of Los Alamos, New
4Mexico, who passed away on February 14, 2013; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Gordon Keating grew up in Edwardsville and
6graduated from Edwardsville High School, he subsequently
7earned his bachelor's degree with distinction in geology from
8Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota in 1988, his master's
9degree from Michigan Technological University in 1991, and his
10Ph.D. in geology at the University of New Mexico in 2000; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Gordon Keating grew up passionate about natural
12history, geology, and volcanology; after college, he worked for
13the United States Geological Survey at the Cascades Volcanic
14observatory, where he met a fellow geologist and his future
15wife, Elizabeth; and
 
16    WHEREAS, After his tenure at the USGS, Gordon Keating and
17his wife moved to New Mexico; in 1995, he began working for the
18Los Alamos National Laboratory; he has published numerous
19papers in volcanology and helped to develop eruption and
20erosion histories for volcanic centers, including Yucca
21Mountain in Nevada; most recently, he was contributing to
22projects related to carbon sequestration and energy

1sustainability; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Gordon Keating enjoyed spending time with
3backpacking, camping trips, rafting, canoeing, and cycling; he
4also enjoyed playing traditional music, especially old-time
5American and Irish styles; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Gordon Keating was a member of the Unitarian
7Church of Los Alamos and had a strong commitment to working
8with young people as an adviser to youth groups at the church;
9he also served a term as chairman of the building committee of
10the Unitarian Church; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Gordon Keating was preceded in death by his
12mother, Jody Keating; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Gordon Keating is survived by his father, Richard
14Keating; his wife, Elizabeth; his daughters, Zoe and Flannery;
15and his brother, Philip; therefore, be it
 
16    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL
17ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
18his family and friends, the passing of Gordon Neal Keating; and
19be it further
 
20    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be

2our sympathy.
