2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 | | learn of the death of Gordon Neal Keating of Los Alamos, New |
4 | | Mexico, who passed away on February 14, 2013; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Gordon Keating grew up in Edwardsville and |
6 | | graduated from Edwardsville High School, he subsequently |
7 | | earned his bachelor's degree with distinction in geology from |
8 | | Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota in 1988, his master's |
9 | | degree from Michigan Technological University in 1991, and his |
10 | | Ph.D. in geology at the University of New Mexico in 2000; and
|
11 | | WHEREAS, Gordon Keating grew up passionate about natural |
12 | | history, geology, and volcanology; after college, he worked for |
13 | | the United States Geological Survey at the Cascades Volcanic |
14 | | observatory, where he met a fellow geologist and his future |
15 | | wife, Elizabeth; and
|
16 | | WHEREAS, After his tenure at the USGS, Gordon Keating and |
17 | | his wife moved to New Mexico; in 1995, he began working for the |
18 | | Los Alamos National Laboratory; he has published numerous |
19 | | papers in volcanology and helped to develop eruption and |
20 | | erosion histories for volcanic centers, including Yucca |
21 | | Mountain in Nevada; most recently, he was contributing to |
22 | | projects related to carbon sequestration and energy |
