SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Dr. Raymond E. Robertson of Hinsdale, who passed away on October 3, 2007; and

WHEREAS, Raymond E. Robertson was affectionately known to his patients and students as "Dr. Ray"; he was a pioneer in the use of principles of the human potential movement in his psychiatric practice, emphasizing health (rather than illness) and utilizing extended group psychotherapy to help individuals achieve their goals; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Robertson, a resident of Hinsdale, maintained a private practice in psychiatry with children, adolescents, and families from 1953 until 2006; he was born in West LaFayette, Indiana, to a family doctor and kindergarten teacher; he attended Purdue University and received his medical degree from the University of Chicago Medical School; he served two years as a captain in the United States Army Medical Corps; following his psychiatric residency, he became a staff psychiatrist and later Director of the Institute for Juvenile Research in Chicago and subsequently served as special assistant to the Director of the Illinois Department of Mental Health; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Robertson began his private practice of psychiatry in Hinsdale, and had offices in Hinsdale, Westmont, and later in Oak Brook; he was a member of the medical staff at Riveredge Hospital in Forest Park and at Hinsdale Hospital; he was the clinical director of the Riveredge Adolescent Unit from 1979 to 1990; and he also served as president of the medical staff at Riveredge Hospital and later as a member of its Board of Trustees; and

WHEREAS, In 1990, Dr. Robertson joined the faculty at the Stritch School of Medicine of Loyola University where he taught classes in child and adolescent psychiatry and supervised fourth year residents in the Department of Psychiatry; he was presented the "Faculty of the Year" award by the residents in 1992; he was awarded the Nancy Roeske Certificate of Excellence in 1995 by the American Psychiatric Association in recognition of his outstanding contributions to medical education at Loyola University Medical School; in recent years, Dr. Robertson became interested in the spiritual aspects of psychiatry and lectured and wrote on "Spirituality and Psychiatry"; his hobbies included photography, music, golf, and card games; he enjoyed reading about the world's religions, and was particularly interested in Buddhism; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Robertson was a loving husband, father, father-in-law, and grandfather; he will be missed by all who knew and loved him, especially his wife of 61 years, Mary Helen, nee Bassett, Robertson; his brother, Dr. Edwin S. Robertson; his children, Linda J. (James Warner) Robertson, and James A. (Nancy) Robertson; as well as his four grandchildren, Leah R. Warner, Allison R. Warner, Jay B. Robertson, and Nicholas H. Robertson; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with his family, friends, and colleagues, the passing of Dr. Raymond E. Robertson; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Dr. Raymond E. Robertson as a symbol of our sympathy.
