SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3 learn of the death of Dr. Raymond E. Robertson of Hinsdale, who
4 passed away on October 3, 2007; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Raymond E. Robertson was affectionately known to
6 his patients and students as "Dr. Ray"; he was a pioneer in the
7 use of principles of the human potential movement in his
8 psychiatric practice, emphasizing health (rather than illness)
9 and utilizing extended group psychotherapy to help individuals
10 achieve their goals; and
 
11     WHEREAS, Dr. Robertson, a resident of Hinsdale, maintained
12 a private practice in psychiatry with children, adolescents,
13 and families from 1953 until 2006; he was born in West
14 LaFayette, Indiana, to a family doctor and kindergarten
15 teacher; he attended Purdue University and received his medical
16 degree from the University of Chicago Medical School; he served
17 two years as a captain in the United States Army Medical Corps;
18 following his psychiatric residency, he became a staff
19 psychiatrist and later Director of the Institute for Juvenile
20 Research in Chicago and subsequently served as special
21 assistant to the Director of the Illinois Department of Mental
22 Health; and

1     WHEREAS, Dr. Robertson began his private practice of
2 psychiatry in Hinsdale, and had offices in Hinsdale, Westmont,
3 and later in Oak Brook; he was a member of the medical staff at
4 Riveredge Hospital in Forest Park and at Hinsdale Hospital; he
5 was the clinical director of the Riveredge Adolescent Unit from
6 1979 to 1990; and he also served as president of the medical
7 staff at Riveredge Hospital and later as a member of its Board
8 of Trustees; and
 
9     WHEREAS, In 1990, Dr. Robertson joined the faculty at the
10 Stritch School of Medicine of Loyola University where he taught
11 classes in child and adolescent psychiatry and supervised
12 fourth year residents in the Department of Psychiatry; he was
13 presented the "Faculty of the Year" award by the residents in
14 1992; he was awarded the Nancy Roeske Certificate of Excellence
15 in 1995 by the American Psychiatric Association in recognition
16 of his outstanding contributions to medical education at Loyola
17 University Medical School; in recent years, Dr. Robertson
18 became interested in the spiritual aspects of psychiatry and
19 lectured and wrote on "Spirituality and Psychiatry"; his
20 hobbies included photography, music, golf, and card games; he
21 enjoyed reading about the world's religions, and was
22 particularly interested in Buddhism; and
 
23     WHEREAS, Dr. Robertson was a loving husband, father,
24 father-in-law, and grandfather; he will be missed by all who

1 knew and loved him, especially his wife of 61 years, Mary
2 Helen, nee Bassett, Robertson; his brother, Dr. Edwin S.
3 Robertson; his children, Linda J. (James Warner) Robertson, and
4 James A. (Nancy) Robertson; as well as his four grandchildren,
5 Leah R. Warner, Allison R. Warner, Jay B. Robertson, and
6 Nicholas H. Robertson; therefore, be it
 
7     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL
8 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
9 his family, friends, and colleagues, the passing of Dr. Raymond
10 E. Robertson; and be it further
 
11     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12 presented to the family of Dr. Raymond E. Robertson as a symbol
13 of our sympathy.
