SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Mozell Shavers of Chicago, who passed away on March 20, 2007; and

WHEREAS, Mozell Shavers was born on September 10, 1937 in Montgomery, Alabama; her parents were Luevenia and Ralph Shavers Sr.; and

WHEREAS, She confessed her hope in Jesus Christ at Stone Temple Missionary Baptist Church at an early age; she graduated from Richard T. Crane High School and received her Bachelor's degree in education from Northeastern College; and

WHEREAS, Mozell Shavers worked for the Chicago Public Schools for 40 years; she served as a union steward for many schools and on various union committees, as well as the local school council; she retired from Oscar DePriest Elementary School in 2003; and she also served as an election judge for many years; and

WHEREAS, Mozell Shavers was known as the Queen of pound cakes and for her cooking; she cooked for schools, family functions, and her friends; the staff of Christopher and Mary Lyons schools loved her turkey and dressing; she did holiday cakes, pies, dressing, and all the trimmings for holiday orders; she would tell her niece, Venus, that she would someday carry on the torch in cooking; and

WHEREAS, Mozell Shavers was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph Shavers Sr. and Luevenia Shavers; her brothers, Johnny, Lamont, and Ralph Shavers, Jr.; and her daughter, Valerie Shavers; and

WHEREAS, Mozell Shavers leaves to celebrate her life: her children, Daryl Shavers (Lucy), Valeda Shavers, and Charnell Sanders (Edward); her sisters, Katie Lindsey (Arthur), Elnora Haralson (James), Velma Shavers (Robert), and Delores Shavers; her brothers, Vernon Shavers (Alexandria), and Mark Shavers (Yvonne); her grandchildren, Daryl Jr., James, Chantell, Melanie, Brittany, Katrina, Chanell, Jerome, Scharell, Daryl III, Edward Jr., William, and Jaylin; her four great-grandchildren; her many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; her friend, Betty Allen Greene, who encouraged her to become a teacher; her friends, Bobby Jean Portis and Janet Anderson; and her special daughter, Ethel Collier; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with her family and friends, the passing of Mozell Shavers; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Mozell Shavers as a symbol of our sympathy.
