SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3 learn of the death of Mozell Shavers of Chicago, who passed
4 away on March 20, 2007; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Mozell Shavers was born on September 10, 1937 in
6 Montgomery, Alabama; her parents were Luevenia and Ralph
7 Shavers Sr.; and
 
8     WHEREAS, She confessed her hope in Jesus Christ at Stone
9 Temple Missionary Baptist Church at an early age; she graduated
10 from Richard T. Crane High School and received her Bachelor's
11 degree in education from Northeastern College; and
 
12     WHEREAS, Mozell Shavers worked for the Chicago Public
13 Schools for 40 years; she served as a union steward for many
14 schools and on various union committees, as well as the local
15 school council; she retired from Oscar DePriest Elementary
16 School in 2003; and she also served as an election judge for
17 many years; and
 
18     WHEREAS, Mozell Shavers was known as the Queen of pound
19 cakes and for her cooking; she cooked for schools, family
20 functions, and her friends; the staff of Christopher and Mary
21 Lyons schools loved her turkey and dressing; she did holiday

1 cakes, pies, dressing, and all the trimmings for holiday
2 orders; she would tell her niece, Venus, that she would someday
3 carry on the torch in cooking; and
 
4     WHEREAS, Mozell Shavers was preceded in death by her
5 parents, Ralph Shavers Sr. and Luevenia Shavers; her brothers,
6 Johnny, Lamont, and Ralph Shavers, Jr.; and her daughter,
7 Valerie Shavers; and
 
8     WHEREAS, Mozell Shavers leaves to celebrate her life: her
9 children, Daryl Shavers (Lucy), Valeda Shavers, and Charnell
10 Sanders (Edward); her sisters, Katie Lindsey (Arthur), Elnora
11 Haralson (James), Velma Shavers (Robert), and Delores Shavers;
12 her brothers, Vernon Shavers (Alexandria), and Mark Shavers
13 (Yvonne); her grandchildren, Daryl Jr., James, Chantell,
14 Melanie, Brittany, Katrina, Chanell, Jerome, Scharell, Daryl
15 III, Edward Jr., William, and Jaylin; her four
16 great-grandchildren; her many nieces, nephews, cousins, and
17 friends; her friend, Betty Allen Greene, who encouraged her to
18 become a teacher; her friends, Bobby Jean Portis and Janet
19 Anderson; and her special daughter, Ethel Collier; therefore,
20 be it
 
21     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL
22 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
23 her family and friends, the passing of Mozell Shavers; and be

3 presented to the family of Mozell Shavers as a symbol of our
4 sympathy.
