HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives of the 95th Illinois General Assembly are pleased to recognize significant organizations within this State that work to foster cultural awareness and provide valuable services in their communities; and

WHEREAS, The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Chicago is hosting a celebration on Friday, October 5, 2007, in observance of the 96th National Day of the Republic of China (Taiwan) on October 10, 2007; and

WHEREAS, The Republic of China, the official name of Taiwan, was founded nearly 96 years ago as Asia's first republic; the nation has established a democratic, multiple party political system and is an economic presence that continues to play an important role in the international arena; and

WHEREAS, The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Chicago was formed as a result of the passage by the United States Congress of the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979 to serve the Taiwan citizens in the Midwestern United States and the interests of the Republic of China (Taiwan); and

WHEREAS, We have seen that Taiwan, as a sister-state of Illinois since such relations were established in 1992, continues to strengthen relations with the State of Illinois by increasing opportunities for cooperation and exchange in education, culture, trade, commerce, science, and technology between Taiwan and Illinois, as demonstrated by the signing of a Letter of Intent between Illinois growers and Taiwan importers for the purchase of Illinois-grown agricultural products; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we commend the nation of Taiwan on its many achievements and that we congratulate the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Chicago on the occasion of the 96th National Day of the Republic of China (Taiwan); and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Director General Thomas Cheng of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Chicago with our sincerest wishes for continued success in the future.
