HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Dr. M. Vali Siadat is a skilled academic, with two doctorates in mathematics (a Ph.D. in pure mathematics and a D.A. in mathematics education) both from the University of Illinois at Chicago, received following the earning of his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California at Berkeley; Dr. Siadat has been on the faculty of Richard J. Daley College since 1982, and has been chairman in the Department of Mathematics since 1997; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Siadat has been an outstanding member of the faculty and a dedicated member of the campus community; he does more than teach his classes, he mentors students, performs committee work, performs research, and serves the district; he is a team player who has always shown his respect and appreciation for his colleagues, and has in turn been recognized and honored by them; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Siadat is the founding Director and acted as the Principal Investigator of the Proyecto Access-Chicago, an intensive mathematics-based academic summer program targeting low income and minority students in middle school and high school, for 8 years; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Siadat has also also been active in academic research; in collaboration with a University of Illinois-Chicago math professor, he developed and implemented the Keystone Project, a new approach to teaching basic mathematics that has improved student outcomes in math and has shown to enhance students' general educational skills; the Keystone Project has placed Daley College in the national spotlight, as it was featured in many publications and won various awards; and

WHEREAS, Recently, the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and Council for Advancement and Support of Education 2005 Illinois Professor of the Year Award was presented to Dr. Siadat; the Prestigious Carnegie Award was won in a competition among nearly 400 top professors in the United States; the award recognizes extraordinary dedication to undergraduate teaching at higher education institutions in the United States, innovative instructional methods, achievement as an educational leader, and a record of teaching excellence; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Dr. M. Vali Siadat on winning the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and Council for Advancement and Support of Education 2005 Illinois Professor of the Year Award; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. M. Vali Siadat.
