HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, Dr. M. Vali Siadat is a skilled academic, with two
3 doctorates in mathematics (a Ph.D. in pure mathematics and a
4 D.A. in mathematics education) both from the University of
5 Illinois at Chicago, received following the earning of his
6 Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California at
7 Berkeley; Dr. Siadat has been on the faculty of Richard J.
8 Daley College since 1982, and has been chairman in the
9 Department of Mathematics since 1997; and
 
10     WHEREAS, Dr. Siadat has been an outstanding member of the
11 faculty and a dedicated member of the campus community; he does
12 more than teach his classes, he mentors students, performs
13 committee work, performs research, and serves the district; he
14 is a team player who has always shown his respect and
15 appreciation for his colleagues, and has in turn been
16 recognized and honored by them; and
 
17     WHEREAS, Dr. Siadat is the founding Director and acted as
18 the Principal Investigator of the Proyecto Access-Chicago, an
19 intensive mathematics-based academic summer program targeting
20 low income and minority students in middle school and high
21 school, for 8 years; and
 
22     WHEREAS, Dr. Siadat has also also been active in academic

1 research; in collaboration with a University of
2 Illinois-Chicago math professor, he developed and implemented
3 the Keystone Project, a new approach to teaching basic
4 mathematics that has improved student outcomes in math and has
5 shown to enhance students' general educational skills; the
6 Keystone Project has placed Daley College in the national
7 spotlight, as it was featured in many publications and won
8 various awards; and
 
9     WHEREAS, Recently, the Carnegie Foundation for the
10 Advancement of Teaching and Council for Advancement and Support
11 of Education 2005 Illinois Professor of the Year Award was
12 presented to Dr. Siadat; the Prestigious Carnegie Award was won
13 in a competition among nearly 400 top professors in the United
14 States; the award recognizes extraordinary dedication to
15 undergraduate teaching at higher education institutions in the
16 United States, innovative instructional methods, achievement
17 as an educational leader, and a record of teaching excellence;
18 therefore, be it
 
19     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
20 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
21 congratulate Dr. M. Vali Siadat on winning the Carnegie
22 Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and Council for
23 Advancement and Support of Education 2005 Illinois Professor of
24 the Year Award; and be it further
