| 1 | | HOUSE RESOLUTION | 2 | | WHEREAS, Turner Syndrome (TS) is a chromosomal abnormality | 3 | | that randomly affects those born female; it occurs when the | 4 | | secondary X chromosome is partially or completely missing; | 5 | | many have mosaic Turner Syndrome, for which the number of X | 6 | | chromosomes can vary; and | 7 | | WHEREAS, Most fetuses (98-99%) with Turner Syndrome will | 8 | | die before birth, resulting in approximately 10% of all | 9 | | first-trimester miscarriages, and one in 2,000 live female | 10 | | births has Turner Syndrome; those who do survive often face | 11 | | lifelong physical, emotional, cognitive, and/or psychological | 12 | | challenges that can be mitigated with early diagnosis and | 13 | | treatment; and | 14 | | WHEREAS, More than 30% of individuals born with Turner | 15 | | Syndrome are not diagnosed until they are 15 years of age, and | 16 | | only 3.5% receive adequate care; however, with increased | 17 | | awareness, the livelihoods of those affected can be greatly | 18 | | improved; there are over 85,337 individuals living with this | 19 | | condition in the U.S.; and | 20 | | WHEREAS, An increase in awareness for Turner Syndrome can | 21 | | help those with the condition and can lead to earlier | 22 | | diagnosis and better treatment; and |

| 1 | | WHEREAS, People living with Turner Syndrome deserve the | 2 | | resources, education, and support that they need for a healthy | 3 | | and fulfilling life; therefore, be it | 4 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | 5 | | HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 6 | | we declare February of 2024 as "Turner Syndrome Awareness | 7 | | Month" in the State of Illinois; and be it further | 8 | | RESOLVED, That we urge Turner Syndrome Awareness Month to | 9 | | be used to increase awareness of the condition and urge that | 10 | | funding and support for awareness events, educational | 11 | | initiatives, increased research, and support groups be | 12 | | increased. |
