HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Turner Syndrome (TS) is a chromosomal abnormality
3that randomly affects those born female; it occurs when the
4secondary X chromosome is partially or completely missing;
5many have mosaic Turner Syndrome, for which the number of X
6chromosomes can vary; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Most fetuses (98-99%) with Turner Syndrome will
8die before birth, resulting in approximately 10% of all
9first-trimester miscarriages, and one in 2,000 live female
10births has Turner Syndrome; those who do survive often face
11lifelong physical, emotional, cognitive, and/or psychological
12challenges that can be mitigated with early diagnosis and
13treatment; and
 
14    WHEREAS, More than 30% of individuals born with Turner
15Syndrome are not diagnosed until they are 15 years of age, and
16only 3.5% receive adequate care; however, with increased
17awareness, the livelihoods of those affected can be greatly
18improved; there are over 85,337 individuals living with this
19condition in the U.S.; and
 
20    WHEREAS, An increase in awareness for Turner Syndrome can
21help those with the condition and can lead to earlier
22diagnosis and better treatment; and

1    WHEREAS, People living with Turner Syndrome deserve the
2resources, education, and support that they need for a healthy
3and fulfilling life; therefore, be it
 
4    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
5HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
6we declare February of 2024 as "Turner Syndrome Awareness
7Month" in the State of Illinois; and be it further
 
8    RESOLVED, That we urge Turner Syndrome Awareness Month to
9be used to increase awareness of the condition and urge that
10funding and support for awareness events, educational
11initiatives, increased research, and support groups be
12increased.
