1    AN ACT concerning education.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The School Code is amended by changing Section
527-13.1 as follows:
 
6    (105 ILCS 5/27-13.1)  (from Ch. 122, par. 27-13.1)
7    Sec. 27-13.1. Environmental education.
8    (a) In every public school there shall be instruction,
9study and discussion of current problems and needs in the
10conservation of natural resources, including but not limited
11to air pollution, water pollution, waste reduction and
12recycling, the effects of excessive use of pesticides,
13preservation of wilderness areas, forest management,
14protection of wildlife and humane care of domestic animals.
15    (b) Beginning with the 2026-2027 school year, every public
16school shall provide instruction on climate change, which
17shall include, but not be limited to, identifying the
18environmental and ecological impacts of climate change on
19individuals and communities and evaluating solutions for
20addressing and mitigating the impact of climate change and
21shall be in alignment with State learning standards, as
22appropriate.
23    The State Board of Education shall, subject to

1appropriation, prepare and make available multi-disciplinary
2instructional resources and professional learning
3opportunities for educators that may be used to meet the
4requirements of this subsection (b).

6    Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect July 1,
