SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Annabel Abraham, who passed away on October 5, 2018 at the age of 97; and

WHEREAS, Annabel Abraham was born in Syracuse, New York in 1921; when she was very young, she traveled to Europe with her mother, where she attended school in Geneva, Switzerland; she graduated high school and attended Northwestern University at the age of 15, where she earned a Master of Arts in Speech Therapy; she received a medal from the Italian Government for her mastery of Italian; she married Bernard M. Abraham; and

WHEREAS, Annabel Abraham began her teaching career in Gary, Indiana, working to help support her husband as he finished his Ph.D. in chemistry; in 1953, she and her husband moved to Oak Park, where she taught in parochial and public schools and also helped stroke patients who were suffering from aphasia; and

WHEREAS, Annabel Abraham supported her husband, Bernard, throughout his career of elected public service in Oak Park; following his death, she continued to be active in informal public service; she volunteered at the Ernest Hemingway Foundation and was an advocate for improved handicap access; and

WHEREAS, Annabel Abraham was an avid knitter and enjoyed browsing flea markets, estate sales, and thrift shops; she encouraged her children to read extensively, visit museums, and explore their talents and interests; and

WHEREAS, Annabel Abraham was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard, and her eldest son, Oren Carmi; and

WHEREAS, Annabel Abraham is survived by her children, Daniel, Jesse (Amy Peck), and Abigail; her grandsons, David and Jeremy; and her many friends; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Annabel Abraham and extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Annabel Abraham as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
