 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION
 2        WHEREAS,  The  members   of   the   Illinois   House   of
 3    Representatives  wish  to  congratulate  the  Salem, Illinois
 4    Chamber of Commerce on its 100th Anniversary; and
 5        WHEREAS, Salem is the birthplace of noted orator  William
 6    Jennings  Bryan,  born  in  1860; it is the birthplace of the
 7    G.I. Bill of Rights, and the Gateway to Little  Egypt;  Salem
 8    is  a  great community and a vital part of Southern Illinois;
 9    and
10        WHEREAS, On July 23, 1998 the Chamber  of  Commerce  will
11    celebrate  this 100-year milestone with a buffet luncheon and
12    annual meeting; and
13        WHEREAS, The original charter of the Salem Business Men's
14    Association, issued on February 26, 1898, states: "the object
15    for which it is  formed  is  to  promote  and  encourage  the
16    location  of  manufactories and other industries in our city;
17    to secure from  railroads  and  guarantee  to  the  shippers,
18    reasonable  freight rates; and to encourage in all proper and
19    lawful ways the development of our city and  its  surrounding
20    country.";  today  this  mission statement is still a part of
21    the Salem Chamber of  Commerce  and  its  dedication  to  the
22    community, in seeing new businesses become an established and
23    valued  part  of  the  area,  and  in working to keep Salem's
24    economy healthy and viable; therefore, be it
25        RESOLVED,  BY  THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES   OF   THE
26    NINETIETH  GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
27    congratulate the Salem  Chamber  of  Commerce  on  its  100th
28    Anniversary;  may  the Chamber continue its good work for the
29    City of Salem; and be it further
30        RESOLVED, That a suitable  copy  of  this  resolution  be
31    presented to the Salem Chamber of Commerce.
