SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Gerald "Jerry" Peters of Petersburg,
4who passed away on April 23, 2024; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Jerry Peters, the son of Martha and Lawrence
6Peters, was born in Quincy on August 21, 1939; he graduated
7from Quincy High School; he earned his bachelor's degree in
8civil engineering from the University of Illinois
9Urbana-Champaign, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Theta
10Fraternity; he married Marylee Chval in Forest Park on
11November 28, 1964; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Jerry Peters worked for the Springfield Sanitary
13District for more than 33 years, retiring as executive
14director; he then worked as a consultant at Hanson
15Professional Services and Myers Land Service; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Jerry Peters was very active in and passionate
17about the Illinois environmental engineering community,
18serving as vice president of the Illinois Association of
19Wastewater Agencies, state representative for the Capital Area
20of Engineers, president of the Central Illinois Water
21Pollution Control Association, a member of the Illinois Water
22Pollution Control Board, and a member of the Sangamon County

1Subdivision Development Committee; he also served the Illinois
2Waste Water Plant Operations Association as
3secretary-treasurer and as chair of its Program Committee, and
4he was the recipient of the Young Engineer of the Year Award
5from the Illinois Society of Engineers; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Jerry Peters was committed to his faith and was a
7member of Little Flower Church in Springfield, where he served
8as president of the Little Flower Parish Council and a member
9of the Little Flower Men's Club; he was also a member of St.
10Jude Catholic Church in Rochester and Holy Family Church in
11Athens, where he was a choir member; he was also a board member
12of Knights of Columbus, Holy Family Council #4179; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Jerry Peters was devoted to assisting his
14community, serving on the Regional Planning Committee for Camp
15Widjiwagan - Girl Scouts of Central Illinois, as a judge in
16speaking competitions for the 4-H Club and the Boy Scouts of
17America, as a member of the Elks Club and the Capital City
18Toastmasters Club, and as a volunteer at St. Martin De Porres
19Food Bank, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum, and the
20New Salem State Historic Site; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Jerry Peters enjoyed golfing, traveling, studying
22genealogy, antiquing, book and map collecting, and writing; he
23was a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and the Fighting Illini

1football and basketball teams; he loved spending time with his
2family, particularly at the lakehouse; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Jerry Peters was known for his constant smile,
4his infectious laugh, and the adoration he felt for his wife,
5Marylee; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Jerry Peters was preceded in death by his parents
7and his sister, Marylou Breckenkamp; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Jerry Peters is survived by his wife of 59 years,
9Marylee; his children, Mark (Anna) Peters, Connie (Marc)
10Werts, and Chris (Joe) Adams; his siblings, Donald Peters, Jim
11Peters, and Evelyn Smith; his grandchildren, Maggie, Emily,
12Alexandra, John, Lincoln, Haylee, Joy, Corrine, and Jesse; and
13numerous nieces and nephews; therefore, be it
 
14    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
15ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
16Gerald "Jerry" Peters and extend our sincere condolences to
17his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
18further
 
19    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
20presented to the family of Jerry Peters as an expression of our
21deepest sympathy.
