SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to
3congratulate Fire Captain Michael "Mike" McDermott on the
4occasion of his retirement from the Evanston Fire Department
5on January 9, 2024; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Captain McDermott started his career as a
7firefighter/paramedic in December 1997 before becoming a
8paramedic preceptor in 2003; he was promoted to fire captain
9in March 2007; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Captain McDermott's commitment to his profession
11has been exhibited in his training and educational pursuits;
12he received training in extrication and tactical operations
13and certifications in Hazardous Material Operations, Fire
14Apparatus Engineer, and Fire Officer I and II, and he earned
15his associate's degree in fire science from the College of
16DuPage; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Captain McDermott has worked tirelessly to ensure
18the safety of his fellow firefighters on the job, serving on
19the Safety Committee for 25 years and, more recently, leading
20the effort as committee chair; he also improved departmental
21operations by serving on the Standard Operating Guidelines
22Committee for more than 15 years and on the Evanston Fire

1Department Local 742 Negotiation Committee for several years;
2and
 
3    WHEREAS, Captain McDermott is a decorated firefighter who
4received the Craig Stiles Unit Performance Award, the
5second-highest recognition award issued by the Evanston Fire
6Department to members whose combined acts of bravery,
7dedication, and exceptional professional skill resulted in
8saving human lives or property under adverse conditions; he
9was also awarded the Chief's Letter of Commendation for
10exhibiting exceptional skill and professionalism as a
11paramedic; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Captain McDermott's retirement marks the end of
13an era for the Evanston Fire Department; as a decorated
1426-year veteran, he has exemplified unwavering dedication to
15the safety of the department and its members; therefore, be it
 
16    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
17ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Fire
18Captain Michael "Mike" McDermott on his retirement from the
19Evanston Fire Department after 26 years of dedicated service,
20and we wish him the best in his future endeavors; and be it
21further
 
22    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
