SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Melva Joanne Shephard of Woodstock, who passed away on April 28, 2018; and

WHEREAS, Melva Shephard was born in Meadville, Pennsylvania to Joseph and Hettie May (Miller) McClaughry on September 25, 1929; her family moved to Lancaster, California when she was an infant; she graduated with honors from the University of California, Berkeley with a degree in microbiology; she married Edward Eugene "Gene" Shephard in Berkeley on June 22, 1952; and

WHEREAS, Melva Shephard worked full-time in administrative positions until her retirement in 2001; and

WHEREAS, Melva Shephard was an avid reader and a constant and life-long learner; she enjoyed being engaged in thoughtful conversations with her children and grandchildren; she and Gene lived for four years in Ioninna, Greece and made numerous trips to Mexico, New Zealand, Australia, Switzerland, and most of Europe; and

WHEREAS, Melva Shephard was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of almost 59 years, Gene; her brothers, Paul and Bob; her sister, Kathryn; and her grandson, Anders Swanson; and

WHEREAS, Melva Shephard is survived by her children, Rebecca Shephard, Steve Shephard (Debbie), and Amy Swanson (Scott); her grandchildren, Elizabeth Jordy, Taylor Shephard, Samuel Shephard (Colleen Shuda), Marta Haight (John), and Bjorn Swanson; and her great-grandson, Jeremiah; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Melva Joanne Shephard, and extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Melva Shephard as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
