SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are deeply
3saddened to learn of the death of former First Lady Barbara
4Pierce Bush of Houston, Texas, who passed away on April 17,
52018; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Barbara Bush was born on June 8, 1925 in Rye, New
7York to Marvin and Pauline Pierce; she married George H. W.
8Bush on January 6, 1945; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Barbara and George Bush were married for over 73
10years and had six children, 14 grandchildren, and seven
11great-grandchildren; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Barbara Bush is the second person in American
13history to be First Lady of the United States and the mother of
14a United States President; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Barbara Bush was devoted to improving literacy and
16founded the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy which
17has raised hundreds of millions of dollars to create and expand
18literacy programs in every state; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Barbara Bush championed the National Literacy
20Act, which was signed into law in 1991 and brought widespread

1attention to improving national literacy; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Barbara Bush will be remembered for her sense of
3humor, her friendly and welcoming demeanor, and for being a
4force for good in the world; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Barbara Bush is survived by her husband, former
6President George H. W. Bush; five children, former President
7George W. Bush, former Governor Jeb Bush, Neil Bush, Marvin
8Bush, and Dorothy Bush Koch; 14 grandchildren; and seven
9great-grandchildren; she was preceded in death by her daughter,
10Robin Bush; therefore, be it
 
11    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
12ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
13Barbara Pierce Bush and extend our sincere condolences to her
14family, friends, and all who knew, loved, or were inspired by
15her; and be it further
 
16    RESOLVED, That Barbara Bush lived her life as a witty and
17independent minded bastion of devotion and support for her
18husband, her family, and for the causes that were near and dear
19to her heart; and be it further
 
20    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
21presented to the family of Barbara Bush as an expression of our
