SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are deeply saddened to learn of the death of former First Lady Barbara Pierce Bush of Houston, Texas, who passed away on April 17, 2018; and

WHEREAS, Barbara Bush was born on June 8, 1925 in Rye, New York to Marvin and Pauline Pierce; she married George H. W. Bush on January 6, 1945; and

WHEREAS, Barbara and George Bush were married for over 73 years and had six children, 14 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, Barbara Bush is the second person in American history to be First Lady of the United States and the mother of a United States President; and

WHEREAS, Barbara Bush was devoted to improving literacy and founded the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy which has raised hundreds of millions of dollars to create and expand literacy programs in every state; and

WHEREAS, Barbara Bush championed the National Literacy Act, which was signed into law in 1991 and brought widespread attention to improving national literacy; and

WHEREAS, Barbara Bush will be remembered for her sense of humor, her friendly and welcoming demeanor, and for being a force for good in the world; and

WHEREAS, Barbara Bush is survived by her husband, former President George H. W. Bush; five children, former President George W. Bush, former Governor Jeb Bush, Neil Bush, Marvin Bush, and Dorothy Bush Koch; 14 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren; she was preceded in death by her daughter, Robin Bush; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Barbara Pierce Bush and extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew, loved, or were inspired by her; and be it further

RESOLVED, That Barbara Bush lived her life as a witty and independent minded bastion of devotion and support for her husband, her family, and for the causes that were near and dear to her heart; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Barbara Bush as an expression of our deepest sympathy to her entire family.
