SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
105 ILCS 5/10-20.67 new
105 ILCS 5/34-18.60 new

    Amends the School Code. Requires a school board to enroll its elementary schools in the Scripps National Spelling Bee program and implement an annual district-wide spelling bee competition for students in the 7th grade. Provides that members of the public must be permitted to attend the competition, and the school district shall publish notice of the date of the competition in a newspaper of general circulation within the district. Effective July 1, 2018.

1    AN ACT concerning education.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The School Code is amended by adding Sections
510-20.67 and 34-18.60 as follows:
 
6    (105 ILCS 5/10-20.67 new)
7    Sec. 10-20.67. Seventh grade spelling bee required. The
8school board of each school district that maintains grades one
9through 8 must enroll its elementary schools in the Scripps
10National Spelling Bee program and implement an annual
11district-wide spelling bee competition for students in the 7th
12grade. Members of the public must be permitted to attend the
13competition, and the district shall publish notice of the date
14of the competition in a newspaper of general circulation within
15the district.
