SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Ralph Louis Langenheim Jr. of Urbana, who
4passed away on August 3, 2019; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Ralph Langenheim Jr. was born in Cincinnati, Ohio
6to Ralph Louis and Myrtle (Helmers) Langenheim on May 26, 1922;
7he received his bachelor's degree from the University of Tulsa
8in 1943, his master's degree from the University of Colorado in
91947, and his doctorate from the University of Minnesota in
101951; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Ralph Langenheim Jr. served as an officer in the
12United States Navy during World War II; after training at the
13U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, he participated in
14the D-Day landings; he retired from the Navy Reserve as a
15lieutenant commander; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Ralph Langenheim Jr. began his career in education
17as an assistant professor at Coe College in Iowa; he then
18served as an assistant professor of paleontology at the
19University of California, Berkeley; he then accepted a position
20as professor of geology at the University of Illinois at
21Urbana-Champaign; there, he was named professor emeritus in
221993; and

1    WHEREAS, Ralph Langenheim Jr. worked with the Instituto
2Gelologico Nacional de Colombia, the Geological Survey of
3Canada, the Geological Survey of Iran, the Geological Survey of
4the Republic of China, and the Polytechnic University of
5Albania; he served as a distinguished visiting professor at the
6University of Nevada, Las Vegas and as the book review editor
7of Geological Education; he received the Rudolph Eric Raspe
8Medal from the Institute Geometaphysik Neuschwanstein; he was
9the curator of fossil invertebrates at the National History
10Museum and a partner at Lanman Associates Consultant
11Geologists; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Ralph Langenheim Jr. was a member of many
13professional organizations, including the American Association
14for the Advancement of Science, the Paleontological Society,
15the Geological Society of America, the Society for Sedimentary
16Geology, the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, the
17International Association of Cnidaria Specialists, the
18Illinois Academy of Sciences, the Explorers Club, and the Rocky
19Mountain Biological Laboratory; he was also a member of the
20Naval Institute, the Rotary Club, the Exchange Club, the
21Reserve Officer Association, the National Association of the
22United States Ship Landing Craft Infantry, and Sigma Xi; and
 
23    WHEREAS, Ralph Langenheim Jr. served on the Champaign

1County Board from 1998 until 2014, where he was a member of the
2Environment and Land Use Committee and the Highway and
3Transportation Committee; he was the Champaign County Mahomet
4Aquifer Consortium representative and served on the
5Champaign-Urbana Urban Area Transportation System Committee
6and the Human Services Committee; he was a precinct committee
7representative in Savoy; during every Fourth of July parade, he
8happily carried the American flag at the head of the Democratic
9Party; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Ralph Langenheim Jr. is survived by his wife, Mary
11Casey Diana; his children, Victoria Langenheim and Ralph
12Langenheim; his stepchildren, Eric Steckler and Matthew Diana;
13his granddaughter, Emma Lengenheim; and his
14step-grandchildren, Logan Hodges, Eric Applequist, and Stella
15and Scarlett Steckler; therefore, be it
 
16    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
17ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
18Ralph Louis Langenheim Jr. and extend our sincere condolences
19to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be
20it further
 
21    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
22presented to the family of Ralph Langenheim Jr. as an
23expression of our esteem and respect.
