SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Frank Gallo of Urbana, who passed away on
4March 22, 2019; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Frank Gallo was born in Toledo, Ohio to Joseph and
6Pauline on January 13, 1933; he graduated from the University
7of Toledo and received his Master of Fine Arts from the
8University of Iowa, where he worked with renowned printmaker
9Mauricio Lasansky; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Frank Gallo was a sculptor and the Head of
11Graduate Sculpture at the University of Illinois; throughout
12his years as a teacher, he continued to create his own unique
13sculptures; for a number of years, he exhibited large epoxy
14figures before going to France to study glass at Daum
15Cristallerie in 1972; he was a pioneer in cast paper, a
16technique he taught in the handmade paper and paper casting
17program he helped initiate at the University of Illinois; in
181969, he was commissioned by Time magazine to produce the
19magazine's cover art, featuring a sculpture of Raquel Welch,
20which is in the collection of the National Sculpture Museum; it
21was recognized as Cover of the Year by the American Institute
22of Graphic Arts; and

1    WHEREAS, Frank Gallo received numerous awards during his
2career, including a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship in 1966
3and a National Academy of Arts and Letters Award for Excellence
4in 1969; he was named Best Illustrator of the Year by the
5Society of Published Designers in 1979; he won the Best of
6Category Award, Chicago '79 Annual and the National Sculpture
7Society Annual Sculpture Prize in 1992; he was awarded the
8Senior Scholar Award from the University of Illinois in 1985;
9and
 
10    WHEREAS, Museum exhibitions holding Frank Gallo's work
11include the Whitney Museum of American Art; the Museum of Arts
12and Contemporary Crafts, New York, "People Figures," 1966; the
13Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto International Sculpture
14Symposium 1967; Alliance on Art, the Smithsonian Institute,
15Washington, D.C., 1968; the Museo de Arte Moderna, Rio de
16Janeiro; Works on Paper, Art Institute of Chicago, 1978; the
17Royal College of Art in London group exhibition in 1978; the
18Frank Gallo Retrospective, Paine Art Center, Oshkosh,
19Wisconsin, 1983; the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art; the Los
20Angeles County Museum; and the Baltimore Museum of Art; in
211968, he represented the United States in the prestigious
22Venice Biennale; and
 
23    WHEREAS, Frank Gallo will be remembered for his generosity,
24unique sense of humor, and brazen personality; and

1    WHEREAS, Frank Gallo was preceded in death by his parents;
2his brothers, Sam and Bill; and his sister, Betty; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Frank Gallo is survived by his children, Joseph
4(Stephanie) Gallo and Polly Gallo; his grandchildren, Dillon,
5Ian, Mason, and Mia Gallo; his first wife, Mary Gallo; and his
6dear friends, Barbara and Anne Wolfe; therefore, be it
 
7    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
8ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
9Frank Gallo and extend our sincere condolences to his family,
10friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further
 
11    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12presented to the family of Frank Gallo as an expression of our
13deepest sympathy.
