HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate the students, faculty,
4staff, and alumni of Providence Catholic High School in New
5Lenox on the 100th anniversary of its founding; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Providence Catholic was established in 1918 when
7the Sisters of Providence from St. Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana
8were asked to staff a small high school and teach the 59
9students who were attending; the school was named Providence
10High School on October 22, 1918; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Student enrollment at the school grew through the
12years, and a new co-institutional facility was opened in
13September of 1962 with an enrollment of 340; by 1993,
14enrollment reached 1,140; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Today, Providence Catholic is a co-educational,
16college preparatory Augustinian high school located on 75 acres
17in New Lenox; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Students come from more than 70 elementary,
19middle, and junior high schools within a 30 mile radius; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Dedicated and caring faculty and staff teach a

1demanding curriculum and conduct inclusive service programs in
2a nurturing environment, all with the core Augustinian values
3of truth, unity, and love; the most recent graduating class
4performed over 100,000 cumulative hours of community service
5during their high school careers; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Since 2010, Providence Catholic has produced 840
7Illinois State Scholars, 12 National Merit finalists, one
8National Merit semi-finalist, 57 National Merit commended
9students, four National Hispanic Scholars, and one National
10Achievement Scholarship Program finalist; and
 
11    WHEREAS, In addition to the strong academic offerings,
12Providence Catholic is also known for its competitive
13athletics; the school has 30 state championship titles, the
14most of any private high school in the State of Illinois; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Providence Catholic continues to build upon a
16strong foundation of rigorous academics, competitive
17athletics, and extensive community service; therefore, be it
 
18    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
19HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
20we congratulate Providence Catholic High School in New Lenox on
21a century of education, admire all their years of success, and
22know that, through the hard work of the students, faculty, and

1staff, a bright future lies ahead; and be it further
 
2    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
3delivered to the President of Providence Catholic, Fr. John
4Merkelis, and the Principal of Providence Catholic, John
5Harper, as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
