HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, One of the City of Elgin's goals listed in its
3Sustainability Action Plan is to "educate the community on the
4value of sustainable practices and healthy living"; and
 
5    WHEREAS, The Elgin Sustainability Commission created the
62019 Elgin Earth Month Planning Committee to help expand Earth
7Day into a month-long community awareness initiative on
8environmental issues and sustainability practices; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Both Rep. Anna Moeller and Sen. Cristina Castro
10serve as honorary co-chairs of Elgin Earth Month in 2019; and
 
11    WHEREAS, A diversity of different organizations,
12businesses, and groups, such as the Gail Borden Public Library
13District, Elgin Township, Elgin Community College and many
14others, are collaborating with the city to promote
15environmental awareness and education throughout April; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Over 20 different events, activities, and
17projects are being hosted by a variety of organizations and
18businesses across the entire city during April; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Internationally renowned environmental advocates,
20including Xiuhtezcatl Martinez and Renee Scheltema, have been

1invited to Elgin and will participate in programs designed to
2educate citizens about what they can do to save the planet; and
 
3    WHEREAS, It is understood that sustainability will only be
4achieved by meeting the needs of the present without
5compromising the needs of future generations; and
 
6    WHEREAS, It is more important than ever for local
7governments to work at proactively engaging a mosaic of
8stakeholder groups and to defend the environmental progress
9that has been heretofore gained; and
 
10    WHEREAS, It is essential to expand and diversify the
11environmental movement to achieve maximum progress; and
 
12    WHEREAS, It is important for local communities to stay
13focused on the constant need for environmental activism,
14stewardship commitments, and sustainability efforts;
15therefore, be it
 
16    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
17HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
18we declare April 2019 as Elgin Earth Month and encourage all of
19its citizens, businesses, and institutions to use this time to
20celebrate the Earth and promote the protection of our species;
21and be it further

1    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
2presented to the Mayor of Elgin.
