House Sponsors: WIRSING. Short description: LOAN REPAYMENT FOR TEACHERS Synopsis of Bill as introduced: Amends the Higher Education Student Assistance Act. Establishes the Ryan Loan Repayment for Teachers Program, which requires the Illinois Student Assistance Commission to award a grant to each qualified applicant in an amount equal to the amount of educational loans forgiven on behalf of the qualified applicant pursuant to federal programs of loan forgiveness for teachers and child care providers. Effective July 1, 2003. HOUSE AMENDMENT NO. 1. Deletes everything after the enacting clause. Reinserts the contents of the bill with the following changes. Changes the name of the program to the George H. Ryan Loan Repayment for Teachers Program. Provides that the maximum amount of a grant is $5,000. Requires an applicant to have fulfilled the obligations set forth by Sections 424 and 425 of Title IV of the Higher Education Amendments of 1998 in this State in order to qualify.
