Short description: 
IDPH-PKU TESTING-INFORMATION                                               

Synopsis of Bill as introduced:
        Amends  the  Phenylketonuria  Testing  Act.  Provides  that   the      
   Department of Public Health must require the physician or other health      
   care  provider  attending  a  pregnant  woman  at the diagnosis of her      
   pregnancy to notify the woman that there are expanded screening  tests      
   for  metabolic and genetic disorders that may be given to her child in      
   addition to those tests required by  the  State  and  to  provide  the      
   information  to the woman in writing within 7 days after the diagnosis      
   of the pregnancy.  Provides for similar notification to the mother  of      
   a  newborn  infant  within  24  hours  following  the  infant's birth.      
   Requires  the   Department   to   develop   and   distribute   written      
   informational materials by May 1, 2002. Provides that these provisions      
   become  inoperative  upon  the  Department's  full implementation of a      
   statewide expanded screening program. Effective immediately.
