92_SR0533 LRB9217519BHbh 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened 3 to learn of the passing of James J. Diamond of Mount 4 Prospect, who died June 21, 2002; and 5 WHEREAS, Mr. Diamond was a former dean and longtime 6 economics professor at DePaul University's College of 7 Commerce; his academic career with DePaul spanned more than 8 50 years, from his days as an undergraduate at the College of 9 Commerce to his post as dean of the university's business 10 school; and 11 WHEREAS, Mr. Diamond was reared on the North Side of 12 Chicago; he received his bachelor's degree from DePaul's 13 College of Commerce in 1950 and his master's degree in 14 business administration from the university in 1951; and 15 WHEREAS, In 1953, Mr. Diamond began teaching at DePaul, 16 specializing in economic theory and econometrics; after 17 completing master's and doctoral degrees in economics at 18 Northwestern University in 1962, Mr. Diamond became an 19 integral part of DePaul's business school and its economics 20 department; and 21 WHEREAS, Mr. Diamond served as department chairman from 22 1966 to 1970, as associate dean of the Graduate School of 23 Business from 1968 to 1970, and then as dean of the College 24 of Commerce from 1971 to 1978; and 25 WHEREAS, Mr. Diamond returned to the economics department 26 to teach full time until his retirement in 1988, the same 27 year in which he was given the university's highest 28 faculty/staff honor, the Via Sapientiae Award; and 29 WHEREAS, As professor emeritus, Mr. Diamond taught 30 part-time at DePaul until September 2001; in 1996, a former 31 student of Mr. Diamond's, Dennis Calvanese, and his wife, -2- LRB9217519BHbh 1 Sandra, endowed the James J. Diamond Scholarship, given 2 yearly to four DePaul students majoring in economics; and 3 WHEREAS, Mr. Diamond was devoted to DePaul University and 4 his influence on the economics department cannot be 5 overstated; he let no bias or prejudice, desire to please or 6 fear of offense, cloud his thinking; and 7 WHEREAS, Mr. Diamond was president of the Illinois 8 Economic Association from 1980 to 1981; he was also a member 9 of the American Economic Association and the Econometrics 10 Society; he served as a consultant to several businesses and 11 non-profit organizations; and 12 WHEREAS, Mr. Diamond will be deeply missed by all those 13 who knew him and loved him, especially his wife, Mary Ann 14 Diamond; his son, James Stephen (Elizabeth) Diamond; his 15 daughter, Ann Catherine (Wayne) Wilson; and his 16 granddaughter, Melissa Diamond; therefore, be it 17 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SECOND GENERAL 18 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with 19 his family and friends, the death of James J. Diamond; and be 20 it further 21 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 22 presented to the family of James Diamond with our sincere 23 condolences.
