92_SR0498 LRB9217727RHrhA 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to 3 express their sincerest condolences to the family and friends 4 of Alexander Magnus, who passed away on August 20, 2002; and 5 WHEREAS, Born in 1926, Alexander Magnus was a self-made 6 successful businessman and the President of Manteks 7 Corporation based in Arlington Heights; he had a degree in 8 engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology 9 and distinguished himself in service to his country as a 10 paratrooper during World War II; and 11 WHEREAS, In addition to being the guiding force behind a 12 prosperous business, Mr. Magnus was known to be a 13 philanthropist, donating substantial sums of money to 14 worthwhile causes; and 15 WHEREAS, Mr. Magnus was especially concerned with the 16 plight of Christians in the southern Sudan who were the 17 victims of relentless attacks from the government in 18 Khartoum; he played a significant role in bringing attention 19 to the misery suffered by tens of thousands in the southern 20 Sudan through his support for international organizations 21 dedicated to bringing relief to the area; and 22 WHEREAS, Much of the southern Sudanese living in the 23 region either had their homes destroyed, were murdered, or 24 were sold into slavery; because of Mr. Magnus' efforts, the 25 United States Congress is currently holding hearings 26 concerning the plight of the southern Sudanese and, in part, 27 due to his efforts, a cease-fire has been called in the 28 region; and 29 WHEREAS, Mr. Magnus was a great man who did his work in 30 relative anonymity; he was a true champion of the underdog 31 with a heart of gold; and -2- LRB9217727RHrhA 1 WHEREAS, Mr. Magnus believed that knowledge was the 2 strongest tool that one could use to bring about change; he 3 dedicated his life to this philosophy as seen in his 4 philanthropist efforts throughout the world; and 5 WHEREAS, The passing of Alexander Magnus will be deeply 6 felt by all who knew and loved him, especially his wife, 7 Maria; his children, Victoria, Mark, Kendis, Nina, Alex III, 8 and Taissa; his grandchildren, Melissa, Anna, Sara, and 9 Joseph; and his brother, Edward, M.D.; therefore, be it 10 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SECOND GENERAL 11 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with 12 all who knew him, the death of Alexander Magnus of Arlington 13 Heights; and be it further 14 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 15 presented to the family of Alexander Magnus with our sincere 16 condolences.
