 1                          SENATE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS, The members  of  the  Illinois  Senate  wish  to
 3    express  their  sincere condolences to the family and friends
 4    of Michael G. Tierney, who passed away on December 18,  2001;
 5    and

 6        WHEREAS,  Michael G. Tierney was born on January 26, 1918
 7    in Elburn, Illinois to Michael J. and Christina Tierney; and

 8        WHEREAS,  Mr.  Tierney  attended  Elburn  Elementary  and
 9    graduated from high school in 1936; and

10        WHEREAS, Throughout his childhood, Mr. Tierney  loved  to
11    play  baseball;  in  1938,  after  playing  with  the  Elburn
12    Collegiates  for  two  years,  he  was  invited  to  attend a
13    baseball camp held in Hot Springs, Arkansas and landed a spot
14    on the team beating out 335 other young men; even  though  he
15    knew  he could start  living his dream, his dream paid little
16    money, so he packed up and traveled  home;  he  continued  to
17    play and major league scouts from the Chicago Cubs to the St.
18    Louis  Cardinals  continued  to follow his small town career;
19    and

20        WHEREAS, Shortly  after  becoming  engaged  to  his  high
21    school  sweetheart,  Isabel  Hansson  in  1940,  Mr.  Tierney
22    received  two  offers, one of which was an invitation to play
23    for the Chicago Cubs Farm Team and the second  was  to  serve
24    and  protect his country; Mr. Tierney, who was the very first
25    draftee from Elburn, left for basic training; and

26        WHEREAS, As his military career was coming to an end, the
27    Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and Mr. Tierney was again one of
28    the first to be sent overseas to England; after five years of
29    military service, he returned  home  to  civilian  life  once
30    again,  and it wasn't long before he returned to his favorite
31    pastime; and

 1        WHEREAS, Over the next 40 years, Mr.  Tierney  worked  at
 2    several jobs before his retirement in 1980; and

 3        WHEREAS,  Mr. Tierney was always serving his community on
 4    various boards and volunteering  his  time,  including  as  a
 5    trustee  for  12  years,  as Commander of the Elburn American
 6    Legion, as President of the Lions Club, as Trustee and  Clerk
 7    of  the  Blackberry  Township  Board, and as president of the
 8    Sunset Swingers; in addition, he was  very  faithful  to  his
 9    church,  St.  Galls,  and he was proud to be part of the only
10    three generation family at the parish; and

11        WHEREAS, The passing of Michael G. Tierney will be deeply
12    felt by all who knew and  loved  him,  especially  his  wife,
13    Isabel  "Izzy"  Tierney;  his  son,  Mike (Mary) Tierney; his
14    grandchildren, Kevin (Sue) Tierney and Kelly  (Jason)  White;
15    his   great-granddaughter,   Kathleen   Marie  White;  and  a
16    community of friends; therefore, be it

17        RESOLVED, BY THE  SENATE  OF  THE  NINETY-SECOND  GENERAL
18    ASSEMBLY  OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
19    all who knew him, the death of Michael G. Tierney of  Elburn,
20    Illinois; and be it further

21        RESOLVED,  That  a  suitable  copy  of this resolution be
22    presented to the  family  of  Michael  G.  Tierney  with  our
23    sincere condolences.
