1 SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to
3 express their sincere condolences to the family and friends
4 of F. Merrill Lindsay, Jr. who passed away on November 2,
5 2001 and Margery M. "Sis" Lindsay, who passed away on
6 November 3, 2001; and
7 WHEREAS, The Lindsays were married on October 19, 1940,
8 at the First Presbyterian Church in Decatur; they are the
9 parents of daughters Lucy Smith and the late Kitty Lindsay;
10 and
11 WHEREAS, Merrill Lindsay's professional career began in
12 the business office of the Herald & Review in 1935; he soon
13 branched out into broadcasting, where he was a familiar voice
14 to the people of the region as a broadcaster on WSOY radio
15 during the 1930s and later served as general manager from
16 1939 to 1956, with time out for service in the Navy during
17 World War II; he was the former director of Midwest
18 Television Inc., and an instrumental figure in obtaining a
19 license to operate the first television station in the area,
20 WCIA in Champaign; and
21 WHEREAS, Mr. Lindsay made his mark in state and national
22 broadcast circles, serving as the first chairman in 1948 of
23 the Illinois Associated Press Radio Association; he was also
24 a member of the board of directors of the National
25 Association of Broadcasters and received a lifetime
26 achievement award from the Illinois Broadcasters Association
27 in 1994; and
28 WHEREAS, Mr. Lindsay continued to be active on the
29 newspaper side, serving in numerous roles, including as
30 president of Lindsay-Schaub Newspapers, Inc. and as a
31 director of Quincy Newspapers, Inc. since 1956 and as
32 chairman of the board since 1971; and

1 WHEREAS, In addition to his business interests, Merrill
2 Lindsay was active in community affairs, serving as the
3 Association of Commerce president in the late 1950s and being
4 a director of such causes as the Community Chest and American
5 Cancer Society; he was also a trustee of Millikin University
6 and was inducted into the Decatur Hall of fame in 1996; and
7 WHEREAS, Margery Lindsay also was active in civic
8 affairs, serving as president of the then-Decatur Day Nursery
9 board, and was one of the founders of the Junior Welfare
10 Association; and
11 WHEREAS, The Lindsays' reputation for charity grew from
12 substantial donations to numerous education and community
13 institutions; some of the recipients include the Frank M.
14 Lindsay Field and new press box at Millikin University, the
15 DMH Thrift Shop, the Learning Resources Center at Richland
16 Community College, Decatur Memorial Hospital, St. Mary's
17 Hospital, the Decatur Day Care Center, the Children's Museum
18 of Illinois, and the African American Cultural and
19 Genealogical Society; in addition, they set up a trust fund
20 that provides grants for teachers at South Shores School,
21 where their late daughter Kitty served as principal; and
22 WHEREAS, In 1996, the Lindsays were the first couple
23 honored by Partners in Education for years of dedicated
24 service and financial contributions to education; and
25 WHEREAS, The passing of Merrill and Margery Lindsay will
26 be deeply felt by all who knew and loved them, especially
27 their family, their friends, and the countless numbers of
28 people who have been touched by the Lindsays' generosity and
29 dedicated service over the years; therefore, be it
30 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SECOND GENERAL
31 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
32 all who knew them, the deaths of F. Merrill and Margery M.

1 Lindsay, Jr. of Decatur, Illinois; and be it further
2 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
3 presented to the family of Mr. and Mrs. F. Merrill Lindsay,
4 Jr. with our sincere condolences.
