92_SR0078 LRB9208472KBkb 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened 3 to learn of the death of Irving Johnson of Clarendon Hills, 4 Illinois on February 26, 2001; and 5 WHEREAS, Irving Johnson was born in Chicago and raised in 6 Tinley Park; he was encouraged by his high school chemistry 7 teacher and, with the teacher's help, he earned a scholarship 8 to Cornell College in Iowa; and 9 WHEREAS, Mr. Johnson received a Master's degree and 10 doctorate from Columbia University; in 1946 he joined the 11 chemistry department at Oklahoma State University, focusing 12 on high-temperature chemistry, teaching basic graduate 13 courses in physical chemistry, and supervising the work of 14 master's and doctoral students; and 15 WHEREAS, Irving Johnson moved on to the Ford Scientific 16 Laboratory in 1953, where he studied fuel combustion; in 1957 17 he joined Argonne National Laboratory; during his twenty-nine 18 years at Argonne he worked in the chemical engineering 19 division of the laboratory; he earned worldwide respect for 20 his work in thermodynamics of liquid metal and molten salts; 21 he also worked as a general advisor in the chemical 22 technology division; Mr. Johnson was also an emeritus fellow 23 of the American Institute of Chemists; and 24 WHEREAS, Mr. Johnson enjoyed classical music and 25 photography; Irving Johnson is survived by his loving wife of 26 fifty-eight years, Alice; his sons, Karl and Tom; and his 27 three grandchildren; therefore, be it 28 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SECOND GENERAL 29 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with 30 his family and friends, the passing of Irving Johnson of 31 Clarendon Hills, Illinois; and be it further -2- LRB9208472KBkb 1 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 2 presented to the family of Irving Johnson.
