2 Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,

7 Sec. 6.6. Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Unit
8 (a) The General Assembly finds that the health, welfare,
9 and prosperity of each Illinois citizen and the public's
10 interest in adequate protection against domestic violence and
11 sexual assault or abuse require effective public

13 domestic violence and sexual assault or abuse. For that
14 reason, there is created within the Office of the Attorney

17 consists of assistant attorneys general appointed by the
18 Attorney General, who, together with any other staff deemed
19 necessary by the Attorney General, may on behalf of the
20 people of the State intervene in, initiate, enforce, and
21 prosecute any legal proceeding or matter relating to domestic
22 violence and sexual assault or abuse if the Attorney General
23 determines that the action is necessary to promote or protect
24 the rights and interest of any Illinois citizen.
25 (c) The Attorney General may support prosecution efforts
26 by assisting county State's Attorneys regarding domestic
27 violence and sexual assault or abuse.
28 (d) The provisions of this Section are not intended to
29 conflict with the duties of the Attorney General under the
30 Sex Offender Management Board Act or with the
31 responsibilities of the Attorney General under the Illinois

                            -2- LRB9204223RCcd
1 Violence Prevention Act of 1995, but the Attorney General
2 under the provisions of this Section must serve to promote
3 and achieve the aims and objectives of the Sex Offender
4 Management Board Act and the Illinois Violence Prevention Act
 5 of 1995.

6 Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect January
