1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to recognize organizations that
4 make contributions to the benefit of our society; and
5 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is an
6 international public service sorority founded in 1913 by 22
7 undergraduate students at Howard University to promote
8 academic excellence and to provide assistance to people in
9 need; and
10 WHEREAS, The Chicago Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta
11 Sorority, Inc. boasts an active membership of more than 600
12 professional women rendering public service under the
13 Sorority's 5-point program thrust: educational development,
14 economic development, physical and mental health, political
15 awareness and involvement, and international awareness and
16 involvement; and
17 WHEREAS, The Chicago Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta
18 Sorority, Inc. and D' Estee, Inc., an organization that
19 provides a mentoring program for female high school students
20 in Chicago's Grand Boulevard community, are joining together
21 to host Jabberwock 2002, a biennial scholarship fundraiser
22 benefiting Chicago public high school seniors; and
23 WHEREAS, For more than 75 years, Jabberwock, established
24 in 1925, has helped deserving students achieve their higher
25 education goals by providing much-needed college funds; and
26 WHEREAS, The criteria for a Jabberwock scholarship
27 includes academic excellence, leadership, service, and
28 financial need; and
29 WHEREAS, A Jabberwock scholarship is renewable for 4
30 years for students who remain in good standing with their
31 collegiate institutions; and

1 WHEREAS, Jabberwock 2002 will be held on June 22, 2002;
2 therefore be it
3 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
4 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
5 we commend the women of the Chicago Alumnae Chapter of Delta
6 Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. for their dedication and
7 outstanding efforts on behalf of students in the State of
8 Illinois; and be it further
9 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
10 presented to the Chicago Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta
11 Sorority, Inc. as a token of our esteem.
