1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are proud to congratulate the not-for-profit
4 group Hijos de Boriquen; and
5 WHEREAS, Hijos de Boriquen was founded in 1997 with the
6 sole purpose of providing a creative outlet for Hispanic
7 urban youth in an attempt to distract them from potential
8 urban pressures such as gang-related activities, violence,
9 and drug use; and
10 WHEREAS, Hijos de Boriquen seeks to preserve the customs
11 and traditions of Puerto Rico by introducing mostly second
12 and third generation immigrants to the culture; and
13 WHEREAS, Hijos de Boriquen has helped urban youth to
14 develop a sense of self and confidence by introducing
15 cultural awareness; the members have built relationships with
16 other youth and with mentors and have identified "dedication
17 and commitment" as the personal variables most easily
18 controlled; the mentors and youth have developed a plan of
19 action for their continued growth in academics, community
20 involvement, and other areas; and
21 WHEREAS, The Executive Director of Hijos de Boriquen is
22 Mrs. Migdalia Vasquez; the members are Elizabeth Garcia,
23 Cindy Medina, Luis Green, Angel Pagan, Hector Rodriguez,
24 Miguel Pagan, Jasmine Cuevas, Joanna Rosario, Gabriela
25 Alanis, Jessica I. Hernandez, Douglas Ortiz, Denise Gonzalez,
26 Melodyann Pabon, Maciano Velazquez Jr., Catherine I.
27 Villegas, Alex Joel Viruet, Hector Rodriguez, Yessinia
28 Tolentino, and Yadira Jimenez; therefore, be it
29 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
30 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
31 we congratulate Hijos de Boriquen for its constructive and

1 guiding influence on the Hispanic youth of Chicago; and be it
2 further
3 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
4 presented to Mrs. Migdalia Vasquez, Executive Director of
5 Hijos de Boriqen, as an expression of our esteem.
