1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are proud to congratulate the students who
4 raised more than $485,000 for the 28th annual Northwestern
5 University Dance Marathon from March 8 through 10, 2002; and
6 WHEREAS, More than 500 men and women crowded into the
7 Norris University Center on Friday night, March 8, at 7 p.m.,
8 then danced straight through until 1 a.m. Sunday, March 10;
9 and
10 WHEREAS, More than $300,000 of the money students raised
11 was donated to Friends for Steven, a Buffalo Grove-based
12 organization dedicated to research of nontoxic treatment of
13 neuroblastoma; and
14 WHEREAS, Members of the family of Steven Newkirk, in
15 whose memory they formed the group, attended much of the
16 dance marathon, as well as other families whose children had
17 gone through, or succumbed to, the disease, a particularly
18 aggressive form of pediatric cancer; and
19 WHEREAS, Marathon organizers contributed more than
20 $30,000 to the Evanston Community Foundation, which
21 distributes grants to community service groups in the city;
22 therefore, be it
23 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
24 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
25 we congratulate the students who raised more than $485,000
26 for the 28th annual Northwestern University Dance Marathon to
27 benefit Friends for Steven and the Evanston Community
28 Foundation; and be it further
29 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
30 presented to the Northwestern University Marathon Dancers as
31 an expression of our esteem.
