 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS,  The  members   of   the   Illinois   House   of
 3    Representatives  wish to express their sincere condolences to
 4    the family and friends of Robert "Bob"  McGarry,  who  passed
 5    away on January 22, 2002; and

 6        WHEREAS,  Robert  McGarry  was  born  on June 4, 1927, in
 7    Alexander, North Dakota  to  John  Henry  and  Ada  Catherine
 8    McGarry;  he  married  Lois Ann Evanson on August 30, 1950 in
 9    East Grand Forks, Minnesota; and

10        WHEREAS, Mr. McGarry served in  the  United  States  Navy
11    aboard  the  USS  Missouri  during  World  War  II; after his
12    military service, he returned to Grand Forks and worked as  a
13    printer's  apprentice; he later moved to Milwaukee and worked
14    as a printer at the Milwaukee Journal for 10 years;  he  then
15    served  as  president  of Local 13 Typographical Union for 13
16    years; and

17        WHEREAS, After moving to Harvard  in  1976,  Mr.  McGarry
18    bought the Harvard Bowling Alley, which he owned and operated
19    with his wife until his retirement in 1999; and

20        WHEREAS,  Mr.  McGarry  was  active in the McHenry County
21    Democratic Party, serving as the party's  vice  chairman  and
22    chairman;  he was also a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church
23    of Harvard, Harvard Moose Lodge  1289,  and  American  Legion
24    Post  265;  he was also a former member of the Harvard Zoning
25    Board and a driver for the Meals on Wheels program; and

26        WHEREAS, Mr.  McGarry  was  well-liked  despite  being  a
27    Democrat  in  a mostly Republican county and a Packers fan in
28    Illinois; he always was able to keep things  in  perspective;
29    and

30        WHEREAS, Mr. McGarry also enjoyed gardening, reading, and
31    playing  horseshoes;  he  was an avid bowler, having bowled a

 1    score of 300 in 1955; he also enjoyed spending time with  his
 2    grandchildren; and

 3        WHEREAS,  The  passing  of  Robert McGarry will be deeply
 4    felt by all who knew and loved him, especially  his  wife  of
 5    more  than  50  years, Lois; his children, Kevin (Joan), Sean
 6    (Penny),  Molly  (Claude)  Henderson,  Katie  (fiance,   Mark
 7    Gullickson)  Morris,  Maureen  (John) Schultz, Chad (Kristy),
 8    Bridget (fiance Jason Dalton) Bowman,  and  Brendan  McGarry;
 9    his   22  grandchildren;  his  4  step-grandchildren;  his  2
10    great-grandchildren;  his  5  step-great-grandchildren;   his
11    sisters, Marge Larson, Katherine (Joseph) Martineau, and Ruth
12    (Gordon)  Moo; his brother, William (Maxine) McGarry; and his
13    many nieces and nephews; and

14        WHEREAS, In many ways, Robert McGarry's life was  one  of
15    bringing  unity  to  people;  he  was a friend to everyone he
16    encountered;  therefore, be it

17        RESOLVED,  BY  THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES   OF   THE
18    NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
19    we  mourn,  along  with all who knew him, the death of Robert
20    McGarry of Harvard, Illinois; and be it further

21        RESOLVED, That a suitable  copy  of  this  resolution  be
22    presented  to  the  family of Robert McGarry with our sincere
23    condolences.
