92_HR0608 LRB9212461RHrh 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 3 Representatives are honored to recognize milestone dates in 4 the history of cities in the State of Illinois; and 5 WHEREAS, It has come to our attention that the City of 6 Joliet, Illinois is celebrating its 150 anniversary of 7 incorporation; and 8 WHEREAS, Originally incorporated as Juliet, Illinois, in 9 1837, the city was reincorporated in 1852 as Joliet in 10 recognition of the explorer, Louis Joliet (1645-1700); the 11 City Charter was approved on July 5, 1852 and Cornelius C. 12 Van Horn was appointed as Joliet's first mayor; and 13 WHEREAS, The City of Joliet is known as the City of 14 Stone, the City of Steel, and the City of Champions; and 15 WHEREAS, Since the late 1980s, Joliet has experienced a 16 true renaissance; reborn with a diversified economy and a 17 progressive, pro-development posture, Joliet has become a 18 center for cultural, entertainment, and recreational 19 activity; and 20 WHEREAS, Joliet is the Motor Sports Capital of the 21 Midwest with a State-of-the-Art National Hot Rod Association 22 Sanctioned Drag Racing Stadium and a new 72,000 seat 23 NASCAR/Indy Car Speedway; and 24 WHEREAS, Since 1985, Joliet has increased in area by 25 sixty-two percent, growing from 25.34 square miles to 40.71 26 square miles; in addition, 13,000 new residential units have 27 been built in Joliet since 1990 making it the fastest growing 28 community in Northeastern Illinois; and 29 WHEREAS, 2002 promises to be a landmark year for Joliet; 30 in May, Silver Cross Field will open its first season of -2- LRB9212461RHrh 1 professional baseball in the City Center; Joliet, in 2 cooperation with the Joliet Park District, will open Splash 3 Station, providing water park fun and thrills for all ages; 4 in September, a new library will open on the City's west side 5 and Joliet's rich history will be on display in the Joliet 6 Area Historical Museum; therefore, be it 7 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 8 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 9 we congratulate the residents of the City of Joliet on the 10 celebration of the City's 150th anniversary of incorporation, 11 and we wish them continued success in the future; and be it 12 further 13 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 14 presented to the City of Joliet as an expression of our 15 esteem.
