92_HR0587 LRB9211205RHrh 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 3 Representatives wish to express their sincere condolences to 4 the family and friends of Patricia A. Jones, who passed away 5 on December 2, 2001; she was the beloved wife of Illinois 6 Senate Democratic Leader Emil Jones, Jr.; and 7 WHEREAS, Patricia A. Sterling Jones was born in New 8 Orleans on August 9, 1938, the third of 11 children of Leon 9 and Lucille Sterling; she was educated in the Catholic school 10 system in New Orleans, where she became a teacher; and 11 WHEREAS, Patricia Sterling and Emil Jones, Jr. met during 12 a chance encounter at a Chicago restaurant and were married 13 on December 14, 1974; Mrs. Jones served as a partner in her 14 husband's public life as well as in his private life, helping 15 him build coalitions in communities and advising him on key 16 decisions; and 17 WHEREAS, Mrs. Jones attended Loyola University in Chicago 18 and graduated from Chicago State University; and 19 WHEREAS, Mrs. Jones was employed at the City of Chicago 20 Department of Human Services as a coordinator for the Title 21 20 program, which included preschool and Head Start programs; 22 she also taught in the preschool program at the YMCA in 23 Chicago; and 24 WHEREAS, Mrs. Jones served as the school board president 25 at Holy Name of Mary Catholic School in Morgan Park; she was 26 active in her church, Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church in 27 Morgan Park, where she was a former member of the Ladies 28 Guild and an active member of the Pastoral Ministers of Care; 29 in addition, she was a member of the AKA Sorority and a board 30 member of the Beverly Arts Center; and 31 WHEREAS, The passing of Patricia A. Jones will be deeply -2- LRB9211205RHrh 1 felt by all who knew and loved her, especially her husband of 2 nearly 26 years, Illinois Senate Democratic Leader Emil 3 Jones, Jr.; her sons, Jon Sterling and Emil Jones III; her 4 nephew, Emil Alvarez Jones, whom she raised; her 5 stepdaughters, Renee Jones Rose and Debra Jones; her 6 brothers, Leon Sterling, Sr., Charles Sterling, Sr., Michelle 7 Sterling, and Andre Sterling; her sisters, Nona Honore, 8 Lucille Williams, and Maria Stevenson; and her grandchildren, 9 Jonathan and Alexandra Sterling; therefore, be it 10 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 11 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 12 we mourn, along with all who knew her, the death of Patricia 13 A. Jones of Chicago, Illinois; and be it further 14 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 15 presented to the family of Patricia A. Jones with our sincere 16 condolences.
