1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives wish to acknowledge the Winnetka Community
4 House on the occasion of its celebration of 90 years of
5 service to its community; and
6 WHEREAS, The Winnetka Community House was the idea of the
7 Rev. J.W.F. Davies, who wanted to provide the young people of
8 the community with activities that would enrich their lives;
9 Rev. Davies' idea was to become the first community center in
10 the United States designated solely for community purposes;
11 and
12 WHEREAS, Since 1911, the Winnetka Community House has
13 been a gathering place facilitating conversation,
14 volunteerism, and harmony throughout the community; it
15 enriches the lives of North Shore residents and their
16 families and friends by providing diverse educational,
17 cultural, social, and recreational opportunities for people
18 of all ages; and
19 WHEREAS, The Winnetka Community House, despite the Great
20 Depression, numerous wars, and a fire that destroyed most of
21 the original building, has never relied on tax dollars to
22 support its operations; and
23 WHEREAS, The Winnetka Community House holds precious
24 memories of the lives of countless North Shore Residents
25 while looking forward to continuing community service for
26 future generations; therefore, be it
27 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
28 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
29 we declare December 1, 2001 as Winnetka Community House Day
30 in the State of Illinois; and be it further

1 RESOLVED, that a suitable copy of this resolution be
2 presented to the Winnetka Community House as an expression of
3 our esteem.
